Dimensions guide

YouTube Thumbnail Size & Dimensions

YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for a video custom thumbnail, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640 pixels.

Current upload guidance

Start with a 3840 × 2160 px canvas when preparing a new video thumbnail. A 1280 × 720 px image remains a common, lightweight 16:9 working or export size, but it is not YouTube's current recommended upload resolution.

A 16:9 canvas matches modern video playback. If the source artwork uses a different ratio, crop it deliberately or fit it inside the frame—stretching it changes proportions and makes faces, logos, and type look unnatural.

Public image variants

Thumbnail sizes exposed by YouTube

These are public delivery files, not upload recommendations. Individual availability and actual dimensions can differ.

maxresdefaultLargest available variantOften 1280 × 720, but dimensions can vary and it may not exist.
sddefaultStandard definitionCommonly 640 × 480 and often uses a 4:3 frame.
hqdefaultHigh qualityCommonly 480 × 360 and often uses a 4:3 frame.
mqdefaultMedium qualityCommonly 320 × 180 in a 16:9 frame.
defaultSmall defaultCommonly 120 × 90 and intended for compact placements.

A missing maximum-resolution file does not mean the video has no thumbnail. It usually means YouTube only generated or exposed a smaller variant. The TubeThumbnail downloader checks each size before showing actions.

Shorts distinction

YouTube Shorts thumbnail size

For a custom Shorts thumbnail, YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 px, a 9:16 aspect ratio, and a minimum height of 640 px. That vertical upload guidance is separate from the public thumbnail variants this site retrieves.

Design for the feed

Make the image readable at every size

01

Compose safely

Keep faces, products, and essential words away from the edges. Leave room for cropping and interface overlays.

02

Limit the text

Use a short phrase, large letterforms, and generous spacing. Details that look fine at 1280 px can disappear on mobile.

03

Create contrast

Separate the focal subject from the background with light, color, scale, or negative space instead of visual clutter.

04

Test small

Review the design at realistic feed sizes before publishing, not only in a full-screen editor.

Export choices

Image format and file size

YouTube's current upload guidance explicitly cites JPG and PNG. JPG is efficient for photos; PNG can preserve sharp graphics well but may produce a larger file.

TubeThumbnail also supports WEBP for local processing and export. That support is a TubeThumbnail capability, not a claim that YouTube recommends WEBP uploads.

Current limits vary by device: on mobile, video thumbnails are limited to 2 MB and podcast thumbnails to 10 MB; on desktop, video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails can be up to 50 MB.

Size FAQ

YouTube thumbnail dimensions, answered

What is the recommended YouTube thumbnail size?

YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for a video custom thumbnail, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640 pixels.

What aspect ratio should a YouTube thumbnail use?

Use a 16:9 aspect ratio. It matches the shape of YouTube video players and most thumbnail placements.

Can I still use 1280 × 720?

Yes. It remains a common lightweight 16:9 working and export size, but it is not YouTube's current recommended upload resolution.

What happens if my thumbnail is not 16:9?

It may be cropped, letterboxed, or displayed with unused space depending on where it appears. Compose important content inside a 16:9 frame before uploading.

Why are some YouTube thumbnail resolutions unavailable?

YouTube does not expose every generated variant for every video. Source resolution, age, processing state, and video type can affect availability.

What format should I use for a YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube's current upload guidance explicitly cites JPG and PNG. TubeThumbnail also supports WEBP for local editing and export, but that is a tool capability rather than YouTube's stated upload recommendation.

What size should a YouTube Shorts thumbnail be?

For a custom Shorts thumbnail, YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, a 9:16 aspect ratio, and a minimum height of 640 pixels.
